Welcome to the second week of the Transportation Tuesdays series. We are teaming up with Frogs and Snails and Puppy Dog Tails every Tuesday in September. This week the focus is on boats! I knew as soon as I thought about what we could do with boats, that I wanted to do some kind of water play bin. We recently purchased these: Sesame Street Fizzy Tub Colors, and I was really excited to try them. They don't stain, and color water so easily. I filled a plastic tray with water, added one color tablet, a couple boats, and an assortment of colored, textured links.
What I came up with, is a 3 in 1 activity! This Color Stacking Boat Obstacle Course is a sensory water bin, a boat obstacle course, and a color stacking activity. I changed Kingston into a swim diaper, sat him on the floor in the front of the dish, and watched the magic happen. He was so excited!
He started off just playing with the water. We have never done a colored water activity before, so Kingston was very intrigued by the fact that the water was not clear. He sifted a few handfuls through his fingers before sinking both of his hands in.
We talked about the color of the water, the temperature, and the way it felt. Then we both turned our attention to the colored links and the boats. I pointed out the boats (which he plays with in the bath tub all the time!). I showed him how to take the boats through the obstacle course. He watched as I drove the boat around each one of the links. Then he took the boat and splashed it in the water and on top of a few of the links. It was adorable watching him try to interpret and navigate the obstacle course on his own. When he was done weaving around the links, he started picking each one up and examining the different textures.
Then we practiced stacking the links on the boat. As he picked up each link, we named the color. Then I asked him to put the link on the certain colored boat.
Here is a video of him stacking the links (notice he points out the pink boat! Proud Mama moment!!):
Then, just as we were having a great time, Kingston pooped in his swim diaper. Yup! I thought before I put him in it, "Oh we should be fine, he is sitting on a towel if he pees". Pee would have been welcomed to what he ended up doing. He was pretty proud of himself afterwards! He hammed it up, and I got some adorable pictures of him.
Oh how I love this stinky little baby!!
We finished up the activity with a little bit more splashing.
I put the water in my hands and showed him the blue color. He enjoyed examining his own hands to see the blue color.
Don't forget to head over to Frogs and Snails and Puppy Dog Tails and check out their absolutely adorable Sailboat Craft.
