His newest habit is wanting to feed himself! He lets Mama feed him at the beginning of the meal, but by the end K is in charge!
He is very good at lifting the spoon and putting it in his mouth! It has led to some messy mealtimes and I've started trying out our new Ikea bibs that cover his entire body .. almost like a baby straight-jacket of sorts. Because of Kingston's new eating habits, we have started giving him baths every night. I love letting him explore his food and try out his new found independence. I am thrilled that he has interest in learning how to eat with utensils already!!
The newest food we have tried is butternut squash. Hubby sliced the squash in half, scooped out all the seeds, and we baked it in the oven for an hour. When it cooled, I scooped out all of the "meat" and put it in the Baby Bullet with 4 oz of breastmilk. It turned out delicious!! It tasted very good. I was able to make 10 days of meals from that one squash! I was so excited to try it with Kingston.
What was the verdict .....?
He cried.. he gagged... he did this really strange shudder/choking thing that nearly gave me a heart attack. He seemed to HATE it! I thinned it out more ... he shuddered a little bit less. I thinned it out a tiny bit more and we were in business. He seemed to like it a little more, but it wasn't quite the hit that the sweet potatoes were. The texture of butternut squash is so different! I can see why he was put out by it. It is stringy and chunky.
The next day, I thinned it out with a little water before giving it to him and it was a success! He leaned forward for more and I was so relieved! They say you have to try a food 15 times before you know if baby likes it, but for Kingston, I think it was just a texture issue. Now we have been eating squash for four days and he is a champ with it.
Next up we are doing organic sweet peas!!
